A TFCA is defined as “the area or component of a large ecological region that straddles the boundaries of two or more countries, encompassing one or more protected areas as well as multiple resource use areas”. What makes the concept so progressive is that it is marketed in terms of ecosystems and not in terms of political or geographical boundaries. It unites African nations as viable and worthy collective tourist destinations and thereby boosts economic growth. It also promotes greater collaboration between African countries when it comes to conserving and protecting this continent’s rich and extraordinary environments, nature, heritage and cultures. Boundless Southern Africa is also a positive response to the African Legacy Programme that was devised by the 2010 Local Organising Committee. Launched at the 2008 Tourism Indaba in Durban, Boundless Southern Africa is the marketing brand chosen by nine southern African countries to represent some of the best tourism products the region has to offer, namely: /Ai-/Ais – Richtersveld Transfrontier Park - South Africa, Namibia Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park – Botswana, South Africa Kavango Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area – Angola, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe Limpopo-Shashe Transfrontier Conservation Area- Botswana, South Africa, Zimbabwe Great Limpopo Tranfrontier Park – Mozambique, South Africa, Zimbabwe Lubombo Transfrontier Conservation Area – Swaziland, Mozambique, South Africa Maloti Drakensberg Transfrontier Conservation Area – Lesotho, South Africa Boundless Southern Africa is a forward-thinking marketing initiative that promotes seven transfrontier conservation areas (TFCA’s) within southern Africa to potential investors and tourists around the world. Thank you to all who were able to attend the exciting event and to the Metro Police, Netcare 911, the ICC and Kagiso staff for ensuring the event went off without a hitch. The Boundless Southern Africa Expedition, led by Kingsley Holgate of National Geographic Travel, departed 11 May from the ICC in Durban, during the Tourism Indaba. The 4 month expedition aims at raising awareness of seven Transfrontier Conservation Areas (TFCAs) as tourist and investment destinations. The seven TFCAs are /Ai/Ais/Richtersveld, Kgalagadi, Kavango-Zambezi, Limpopo-Shashe, Great Limpopo, Lubombo and Maloti-Drakensberg. The first leg of the expedition will begin at the Maloti - Drakensberg TFCA, which South Africa shares with Lesotho. The expedition will also be characterized by the following humanitarian activities: * * One Net One Life, campaign*, which is the distribution of mosquito nets in malaria prevalent TFCAs to pregnant mothers and children under five. * * Teaching on the Edge *project which focuses on the donation of mobile libraries to rural schools around the Transfrontier Parks. * * Right to Sight* Campaign where reading glasses will be distributed to the poor sighted. * Upgrading of Soccer fields and distributing soccer balls * Community days in each TFCA will be observed through soccer matches amongst other things to raise awareness about the 2010 Soccer World Cup. The departure event which was hosted by Kingsley Holgate and the expedition team included vibrant cultural performances by Shaka Land, Lesedi, Matsamo and Lesotho artists, an adrenaline pumping thrill as the Jump Garmin Skydiving Team skydived onto the ramp outside the ICC, the beautiful Miss South Africa, Tatum Kheshwar, was on hand to pose for photos and cut the ribbon to mark the launch of the expedition. Led by Metro Police and a mountain bike team, the expedition vehicles made their way out of Durban followed by a convoy of over 50 Land Rovers to begin the first leg of the expedition.
